Hello Everyone!
Happy Holidays and greeting from all of us at the Sunflower Spectacle. As some of you might know we have recorded a Christmas album, titled: "It's Christmas…Don't Be So Sad." When we say Christmas album we do not mean covers of Christmas songs, we are actually talking about original songs written about a wide variety of subjects that surround the holiday season. Some of which include; Alcohol, Loneliness, Heartbreak, and the classic Christmas feeling of sad yet hopeful nostalgia. However not all the moments are dismal. There is a song about a sleigh ride, and a song about being home with family and friends on Christmas. Hopefully there is a song for you. If you would like you can preview some of the songs on our myspace, and if you want buy an album. We are having a Christmas/listening/releas

e party on the Dec. 20th at the apartment above 709 following the show. There will be eggnog and Christmas sweaters, and everyone will be there. You should come. Everyone should come, bring your friends. We will have cheese dishes and hot chocolate, and conversations.( I will provide more information at the bottom of this post dealing with time and location.)
If you cannot attend and want to purchase a record we have them for sale online just go to our myspace page and click the link under the giant christmas tree picture.
We will also be performing the entire record with the My Idea Of Fun artist collective at 709's Christmas show on Dec. 27th. Please check out My Idea Of Fun it is filled with great people, and wonderful music.

In other news we are working very hard with friend Troy Bugosh on our record "Too Anxious For Rivers." Things have been going great, everything is already sounding very good, and everyone is coming up with ideas and creative input. We will soon have pictures of the recording process posted if anyone cares to take a look.

Hello Everyone, The Sunflower Spectacle has been very busy as of late. We just wanted to give all of you an update of things to come. First off we have created a T-shirt design, that includes a dinosaur, an elephant, and the words "We Are A Zoo?" Yes with a? mark. These shirts should be ready soon. The Sunflower has also been working on an all acoustic set which will be unveiled at the Oct. 19th show at 709. As well as the Brown Hotel Show on Nov. 1st. Christopher D. Kupchella, has been very busy, and reclusive as of late, locking himself in his room to write The Sunflower Spectacles Christmas album; its Christmas…Don’t be sad.. The word is that he has completed it. Soon the Spectacles will assemble to record the Christmas album with Friends and Johnstown musicians Matt Miller and Brandon Locher. The album itself will be available for online and of course at the 709 Christmas show. Soon after The Spectacles will begin work on their first full length with our friend Troy at his home studio. Also, Chris and Derek’s project: The Anti-Corn League has just finished their first record.

So it's been some time since we have updated this thing. We have been some what busy lately. We've had some deaths among our friends recently, but in the wake of that, we probably had our best shows. August 9th, 2008 was a glorious and humid day for the Johnstown music scene, with over 100 people in attendance; Sincerely, Yesterday, The Beagle Club, A Brand New Jersey, Sunflower Spectacle, February Fourteenth, Brandon Shreve, and Elem entary Thought Process took to the stage at 709 RR St.I thought we played our best set that night, with 2001 Space Odyssey projected behind us and the psychedelic light creating silhouettes on the wall beside us. Every time I looked around at everyone playing, they were just smiling and having so much fun, that it made me smile. The rest of the bands were amazing that night, I think this was ETP's first show since, I believe , 2006. But either way, they were a great ending to a great night. Scottey, great job!

The show ended around 11 that night and we were due at Afterfest, our 2nd show that night, at 10pm. So after we gathered everybody up, we headed to the party of the summer. We arrived at Afterfest which was located in a field deep in the woods of Lilly, Pa. With 2,000 dollars made that night for families of the july 13th accident, there was 200 plus in attendance. We arrived around midnight and our worries of being too late faded when we noticed the 3rd band was still playing at the time. We were then informed that we would go on last early in the morning. So we decided help ourselves to the endless supply of alcohol, drugs, and food. So after a few hours of child like behavior, we were set to take the stage. Time had elapses and it was 4am Sunday morning, August 10th. We took the stage fighting through the jungle like cords and in no condition to be playing music due to narcotics. The set went pretty great, I mean it was 4 in the morning, the whole place was beyond fucked up by this point but people were stilling dancing, laughing and smiling. We ended at 5am and felt good about oursleves. I cant thank those guys enough for sticking it out and coming through and playing a fuckin' brilliant show for my late friends that sadly couldnt be there. Im not sure if i thanked them enough, but thank you guys. There is alot more that I could be writing about these two shows but I just decided to not get into to much detail with these.

Also, we have an update on the album. We've decided to bring in Troy from the Migrations to record our album. We our excited about this and can not wait to get started. Were hoping to get it completed in the next few months and then hit the road in the spring.

Not much to say about the last recording sessions which took place at Justin Gyurik's in Indiana, Pa. The night in breif went drive, arrived, hauled, sat, hauled, sat, hauled, sat, smoke, beer, smoke, haul, record, turtles, smoke, beer, smoke, beer, record, record, cat named Paul, smoke, play along to electric drum set demos, haul, drive.

But in more detail, we recorded two out of three of Shoff's(me) guitar parts for the three new songs. But after discussing with Chris the past few days, we came to the conclusion that we're not fully happy with the result. So re-recording will take place in the next few days. More photos from the day located below.

The writing process also continued this week, with a new song created. The only photo evidence I have of this, is a photo of Dereck, Chris, and Ed writing before my camera died. We plan on writing a few more songs then focus on mainly recording. If we do so, the record, I think, will sound great. Especially the new song, I am most excited for that one, i think. Probably the funniest one out of all of them. I hope you guys are excited as we are. Cause that's a lot of excitement.

The Times They Are A-Changin'

Chris Kupchella, Derek Gresh, Kevin Horvath, Jonathan Rager, Cory Shoff, and Brandon Shreve have separated from the band called Soundrive and created its own life as The Sunflower Spectacle. Thanks to 709 Railroad St., The Sunflower Spectacle have been writing and creating for the past few weeks for our first album, Too Anxious For Rivers, and have turned out some new songs, that have come together nicely. Chris, Kevy and Jonathon have been recording the older songs for the past couple months, with help from Justin Gyurik. They have all come together marvelously, and we are excited to get them mastered and out to everybody. So, this past Tuesday, we met up and got down to business. Well, after hauling one thing in at a time, then taking a breaking between hauls. But after Justin arrived, we got down to business.

Kevy started it off, and record the drum tracks for the new songs; all in one try. Kevy, who stated,"I'm better then Keith Moon!" re-recorded the drums for "Mean Mr. Time" with the already recorded guitar, bass and all that, which is nearly impossible. Kevy pulled it off with flying colors. Dereck was finally able to put down some guitar parts for the songs, but with the program acting strange, Spectacle packed it up early that night. We hope to have demos/un-mastered versions of a few of our songs up on our myspace soon. After several several weeks of writing, I guess you could say we're taking a vacation, well Chris is, anyway. Chris will been gone for a week and the Spectacles music will be put on hold for a week. When Chris arrives back in Pennsylvania, Spectacle will be back at it. I dont think we've ever been happier making music together and everything is working so well, its hard not to be excited. Here a few other photos from Tuesday.
